As we get ready for her first exciting homeschool year, I’ve been gathering and organizing our curriculum choices for preschool. And I use the term curriculum loosely here since this is her very first preschool year. Next year we’ll get a bit more structured, but for now, we’re keeping things playful and gentle.
Preschool is one of my favorite ages to teach because learning happens so naturally through play, stories, songs, and exploration. I keep things simple and flexible. I also like having a few guiding resources. These resources provide structure without taking away the joy of discovery.
Here’s a peek at what we’ll be using this year!

Language & Early Literacy
Books are at the heart of our preschool. We’ll be spending lots of time reading aloud, looking at pictures, and talking about stories. Some of my go-to resources are:
- Bob Books for gentle first steps into reading.
- Dr. Seuss classics for silly rhymes, rhythm, and repetition.
- The Pigeon series by Mo Willems, her absolute favorite! She loves laughing at Pigeon’s adventures and always asks for “just one more story.”
- Read-aloud time every day, with a variety of picture books.
- Go for the Code ABC Set, our only real “curriculum” at this stage, but it’s light and fun.
- Magnetic Alphabet Kit for working on letter sounds and sight words

Math Foundations
Math at this stage is all about hands-on play and simple connections.
- Counting Bears and Sorting Activities for early number sense and patterns.
- Shape, Alphabet and Number Puzzles to strengthen problem-solving.
- Tangram and Pattern Blocks to explore shapes and spatial reasoning.
- Math Storybooks that sneak numbers into everyday adventures.
- Preschool Math at Home as a gentle, parent-friendly guide.
Hands-On Learning & Play
- Learning Resources Get Ready for Preschool Kit, covers letters, numbers, shapes, and colors in a playful way.
- Learning Resources Toddler Time Set with farm animals and stacking pegs. Great for sorting, colors, and fine motor practice.
- Play-Doh & craft supplies for building creativity and strengthening little hands.
- Gameschooling with simple games that teach colors, matching, and turn-taking.
Science & Nature
- Nature walks for exploring leaves, bugs, and weather.
- Simple experiments like baking soda and vinegar fizz or growing beans in a cup.
- Usborne science books for age-appropriate introductions.
Music & Movement
- Jack Hartmann (YouTube) for fun, educational songs.
- Action songs and dance time to get wiggles out and build rhythm.
Art & Creativity
- Open-ended supplies like watercolors, crayons, markers, and stickers.
- Themed crafts tied to seasons, holidays, or what we’re studying.
Why I Keep It Simple
At the preschool level, I remind myself that less is more. My goal isn’t to check every box but to nurture curiosity, creativity, and a love for learning. Most of our days are filled with stories, play, and exploring the world around us. The curriculum pieces are simply tools to guide us along the way.
