One quiet afternoon, I sat with my 3.5-year-old granddaughter and one of her favorite books, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. She turned the pages slowly. Her eyes were wide with curiosity. I realized something important: learning doesn’t have to be rushed or stressful. It can be joyful, personal, and at her own pace. That simple, magical moment made it clear that homeschooling could give her something traditional schools often cannot. It offers a learning environment built around her unique needs, interests, and strengths.
When we first considered homeschooling with my son in 2020, it wasn’t a decision we made lightly. Schools were struggling to adapt to online learning. Returning in person didn’t feel like the right choice for our family. Like many parents, we weighed every option, asked hard questions, and thought deeply about what would truly be best. Now, as my granddaughter begins preschool, her parents are asking those same questions. We’ve found ourselves returning to homeschooling once again.
Concerns About Traditional Schools
Over the years, we’ve watched the world change. We’ve heard countless stories about bullying, violence, and the challenges kids face in public schools. Overcrowded classrooms, shifting curricula, and staff shortages can make it hard for children to thrive.
We wanted something different for her, a safe, nurturing space where she could grow, explore, and build confidence without fear. Homeschooling gives us the ability to create exactly that.

Every child is unique. Some concepts click right away, while others take time and gentle repetition. Homeschooling gives her the freedom to move forward when she’s ready and linger on the things that spark her curiosity. I’ve already seen her confidence bloom as she explores without pressure.
At home, she isn’t compared to a classroom of twenty other kids. She can spend extra time on what she loves. This includes coloring, puzzles, and storytime. She also receives support in the areas where she needs it most.
Hands-On, Meaningful Learning
Not all children learn the same way. My granddaughter is a hands-on learner, and homeschooling allows her to learn through real-life experiences. Baking becomes a math lesson, gardening turns into science, and nature walks spark endless conversations about the world around us.
Learning isn’t confined to four walls. It happens everywhere, at the kitchen table, in the backyard, or during a quiet moment with a book. These moments create knowledge, but just as importantly, they create memories.
Preserving the Joy of Childhood
Preschool is such a sweet, fleeting season of life. Children deserve days filled with curiosity, messy art projects, and plenty of laughter. Homeschooling lets us protect that joy, instead of rushing her into academics too soon.
We don’t try to recreate a classroom at home. Instead, we weave learning into daily life. We count while baking muffins. Explore shapes while stacking blocks (she’s up to 12 without them falling). We discover balance during play.
Family Values and Stronger Bonds
Homeschooling isn’t just about academics. It allows us to pass down family values, create traditions, and strengthen our connection. As her grandmother, I feel privileged to walk beside her. I am not only her teacher, but also her mentor and cheerleader.
I’ve seen firsthand that homeschooling works. My son thrived in this environment. He graduated from high school at 16. He is now in college working toward becoming a history teacher. Watching his success reminds me daily that children flourish when they’re given the space to grow in their way.
The Gift of Flexibility
Flexibility is one of homeschooling’s greatest blessings. Every week looks different for our family, and homeschooling allows us to adjust. Some days we follow a structured plan, while other days curiosity takes the lead. A walk might spark a science lesson, or a single question might turn into hours of discovery. That freedom keeps learning fresh, meaningful, and exciting.
Our Hope Going Forward
Homeschooling requires patience and dedication, but the rewards are immeasurable. Watching my granddaughter thrive in an environment that celebrates her individuality confirms that we made the right choice. Education is not just about what she learns, but how she learns, through exploration, mistakes, curiosity, and joy.
